Downloadable Universalis (Windows)

This page tells you all about installing and using the downloadable version of Universalis on Windows. For general information about what the downloadable version is and what it does, please see this page.

System requirements

Any version of Windows: Windows 95, 98, Me, NT4, 2000, XP, Vista,...

You need 5MB of free disk space on your computer.

Downloading

Download the following file: UnivWin.exe.

Your browser may let you choose between opening the file and saving it. We usually prefer to save our downloaded files and open them separately later: if you do this, remember which folder (directory) your browser has saved the file into so that you can find it afterwards!

Installation

  1. Double-click on the UnivWin.exe file that you downloaded (depending on how your computer is set up, the icon may simply say "UnivWin"), and follow the instructions.
  2. Once the installation has been completed, you can delete UnivWin.exe.

Entering the registration code

Your program will work for at least a month without needing a registration code. Please use this time to make sure that this version of Universalis works properly and does what you want it to do. Do not buy a registration code until you are absolutely certain that the program is suitable for you.

To buy a registration code, visit this page.

Once you have bought the code:

  1. ScreenshotStart the downloaded Universalis on your PC.
  2. In the downloaded Universalis program you have opened, open the Options menu. To do this, press the F2 key or click on the downward-pointing triangle at the top left of the Universalis window. The triangle looks like this: .
  3. ScreenshotIn the Options menu, select the "About Universalis" page.
  4. Press the button marked "Enter registration code".
  5. ScreenshotType the 9-digit registration code without hyphens or other punctuation. For example, if the code is 123-456-789, enter 123456789.
  6. Press the OK button once to close the Enter Registration Code window, and again to close the About Universalis window.

To remove a registration code

If you are selling or giving away your PC then you should remove the registration code even if you decide to leave the Universalis software intact – unless you are specifically intending to give away the Universalis software and no longer use it yourself.

  1. Start Universalis.
  2. Open the Options menu and select "About Universalis", as before.
  3. Press the button marked "Remove registration code".

Using the program

If you are blind and using a screen reader then please read the alternative instructions for screen readers.

When you first open it, Universalis appears in a tall narrow window on the left-hand side of the screen. We find that narrow windows are best for reading text, but you can move and resize the window to suit your preferences.

The page displayScreenshot

The left and right arrows move backwards and forwards through the days.  The numbered box between them indicates the current day of the month: if you press it, you will get a calendar listing. You can also use the F3 key to do this.

To change which page you are viewing (Mass, Morning Prayer, etc), press F4 or click on the caption at the top right and then pick the page you want from the list that appears.

To copy the text so that you can paste it into another program, you need to put Universalis into Screen Reader mode. You can do this by pressing F2 to open the Options menu and then using the command Format For Screen Reader. Once you are in this mode, you can highlight text with the mouse or use Ctrl+A to highlight it all, and then use Ctrl+C to copy the text to the Clipboard.

To print the text, copy and paste it into Wordpad or a suitable word processor.

The calendar displayScreenshot

The calendar display lets you view and scroll through the liturgical calendar.

To go to a particular day, click on the day.

To return to the page display without changing days, click on the number between the arrows.

To use the built-in Windows date selector to go to any given date, click on the heading that shows the name of the month. You can also press F5 to do this.

To go to today's date, open the built-in Windows date selector and press the button marked "Today" in the page that appears.

The Options menu

To open the Options menu, press F2 or click on the downward-pointing triangle at the top left of the Universalis window. Button

Fonts

You can choose which font type and font size you want Universalis to use.

Calendars

You can choose which local calendar you want Universalis to use.  You can also decide whether you want the same Invitatory Psalm every day, or whether you want the psalm to change every day, going through the four permitted options, as the Universalis web site does.

About Universalis

This page tells you what version of the program and database you are using; it also lets you enter a registration code to unlock your trial version of Universalis and turn it into a licensed version: see the instructions above.

Screen Reader Mode

This puts Universalis into a mode that is easy to use with screen readers for the blind and partially sighted. Here are instructions for using Universalis in that mode.
