Downloadable Universalis (Palm)

This page tells you all about installing and using the downloadable version of Universalis on the Palm. For general information about what the downloadable version is and what it does, please see this page.

System requirements

You need a computer running Palm OS version 3.5 or later.  Most computers manufactured after early 2000 use a suitable version of Palm OS.

You need 5MB of free memory on your computer.

Universalis works with expansion memory cards (see below).

Downloading

Download the following file: univpalm.zip.

Your browser may let you choose between opening the file and saving it. We usually prefer to save our downloaded files and open them separately later: if you do this, remember which folder (directory) your browser has saved the file into so that you can find it afterwards!

Installation

Windows XP and Vista

If you have Windows XP or Vista, you can install Universalis on your Palm OS computer as follows:

  1. Open univpalm.zip by double-clicking on it.
  2. A folder will open and you will see two files, universalis.prc and univ.pdb. Double-click on each one in turn: the Palm Install Tool will open each time, and add the relevant file to the list of files that will be installed on the next HotSync operation.
  3. Perform a HotSync. The total size of the Universalis files is about 4.5MB, so the HotSync that installs Universalis will be slow. On a Palm Vx it takes more than 5 minutes; more modern Palms that use USB for synchronization will be faster.

Other operating systems (including Mac OS)

  1. Extract universalis.prc and univ.pdb from the downloaded file univpalm.zip. Suitable utilities for opening Zip files are available for both Windows and Mac OS. More recent versions of Palm OS can open Zip files directly.
  2. Tell the Palm Install Tool to install both universalis.prc and univ.pdb on your hand-held computer. You may be able to do this by double-clicking on the files, or you may need to open the Palm Install Tool yourself and press the Add button to add the files to the tool's installation list.
  3. Perform a HotSync.

Once the installation has been completed, you can delete univpalm.zip.

Universalis on expansion memory cards

Universalis works on expansion memory cards (SD cards, Memory Stick).  Universalis comes as two files: the program universalis.prc, which is small, and the data file univ.pdb, which is large. You have two choices:

  1. You can place both universalis.prc and univ.pdb on the memory card, and run Universalis from there. Your computer will copy universalis.prc temporarily to main memory before running it, but since this file is small it will not cause much of a delay.
  2. For more advanced users - you can leave universalis.prc in main memory, for speed, and move univ.pdb to the memory card.  In this case, you must copy universalis.prc to a particular location: on the versions of PalmOS we have tested, the name of the directory is /Palm/Launcher.  On some computers this directory will not already exist and you will have to create it.

The application to be used for copying files between main memory and the memory card varies from one PalmOS computer to another.  For example, on the Sony Clié it is called Clié Files.

Entering the registration code

Your program will work for at least a month without needing a registration code. Please use this time to make sure that this version of Universalis works properly and does what you want it to do. Do not buy a registration code until you are absolutely certain that the program is suitable for you.

To buy a registration code, visit this page.

Once you have bought the code:

  1. Start the downloaded Universalis on your Palm.
  2. On your Palm, tap on the word "Universalis" at the top left-hand corner of the screen. This will open the Options menu. Select the "About Universalis" command from the menu.
  3. In the About Universalis page, tap on the button marked "Enter registration code".
  4. Enter the 9-digit registration code without hyphens or other punctuation. For example, if the code is 123-456-789, enter 123456789.
  5. Tap on the OK button.

To remove a registration code

If you are selling or giving away your Palm then you should remove the registration code even if you decide to leave the Universalis software intact – unless you are specifically intending to give away the Universalis software along with the Palm and will no longer be using it yourself.

  1. Start Universalis. Open the Options menu and select "About Universalis".
  2. Tap the button marked "Remove registration code".

Using the program

The page displayScreenshot

To move between the days, tap the left and right arrows at the top of the screen.

To view a calendar listing, tap on the number between the arrows.

To change which page you are viewing (Mass, Morning Prayer, etc), tap on the caption at the top right.

The calendar displayScreenshot

The calendar listing lets you view and scroll through the liturgical calendar.

To move between dates, use the scroll bar at the right-hand edge of the screen.

To move a long way in the calendar - for instance, to another month or another year - tap on the heading that shows the name of the month.

To view the details for a particular day, tap on that day.

The Options menu

To open the Options menu, tap on the word "Universalis" at the top left-hand corner of the screen.

Fonts

You can choose the size and boldness of the font that you want Universalis to use.  In addition, you can choose whether Universalis should display italic text using a synthesized italic font, or whether you prefer it to be displayed in bold. The synthesized font isn't very readable on old-style displays like the one in the picture, but modern higher-density displays manage it quite well.

Calendars

You can choose which local calendar you want Universalis to use.

You can also decide whether you want the same Invitatory Psalm every day, or whether you want the psalm to change every day, going through the four permitted options, as the Universalis web site does.

About Universalis

This page tells you what version of the program and database you are using; it also lets you enter a registration code to unlock your trial version of Universalis and turn it into a licensed version.
