Creating e-books on the Mac

What you need
- A Mac.
- The Universalis program on the Mac.
- If you are going to be using your e-book on an e-book reader, you need some way of connecting your e-book reader to your Mac. Usually this is a USB cable.
1. Set up your chosen calendar and translations
Universalis gives you various local calendars, for various parts of the world. If you haven't already done so, you should tell Universalis which calendar you want.
Open the Universalis program. The top of the screen will look something like this:
Click on the word "Universalis", and you'll see a menu:
Select the "Preferences" option.
In Preferences, look at the Calendars tab and make sure that you have selected the local calendar that you want.
Universalis gives you a choice of translations, so choose the ones you want (if you haven't already done so in the past).
To do this, use the Translations tab of Preferences.
2. Create the ePub e-book on your Mac
With the Universalis program open, open the "File" menu and select the "Create e-book" option:
If you don't see a "Create e-book..." menu item, but separate items called "Create ePub e-book" and "Create Kindle e-book", then you are using an older version of Universalis. Download and install the latest version, because it is much easier to use.
A window will appear, asking you what e-book format you want: choose ePub, not Kindle. On successive pages, it will ask you what dates you want to cover in your e-book, and what pages you want for each day.
Finally, Universalis will create the e-book you have asked for. How long the creation takes depends on the size of the e-book, but it shouldn't take more than half a minute or so.
When the e-book is ready, this is what you will see:
The final step is to transfer the file to your e-book reader. Once you have done this, you can remove the file from your desktop because it's no longer needed.
Getting the e-book onto your device
Press "Save to Desktop", which will move the newly-created e-book file onto your desktop. From there, you need to get it onto your e-book reader.
We can't give you specific advice about this because each e-book reader is different. But your device will have come with instructions for transferring e-book files to it from your Mac. Follow them. The usual sequence of events is that you plug your reader into your Mac and then drag the e-book file from your desktop to a specific folder in the device — but do read the instructions because some e-book readers may require you to take additional steps after you have done this.
Please note that the e-books you create are for your private use only and must not be given or distributed to other people.
