Universalis > Downloadable Universalis > [Operating instructions for Windows]
If you are blind and using a screen reader then please read the alternative instructions for screen readers.
When you first install it on your computer, the downloaded Universalis is an unregistered version, which restricts the dates for which you are allowed to display its content. We encourage you to use the unregistered version first, so that you can be sure that the product is what you want before you buy anything.
Here are instructions for buying a registration code if you don't already own one.
Here are instructions for entering your registration code.
If you have a Windows PC and a handheld computer then you are allowed to use the same registration code for both of them. The same applies if you have a PC at home and another at work – the simple rule is that only one person at a time should ever be using the registration code.
When you first open it, Universalis appears in a tall narrow window on the left-hand side of the screen. We find that narrow windows are best for reading text, but you can move and resize the window to suit your preferences.
The
left and right arrows move backwards and forwards through the days. The
numbered box between them indicates the current day of the month: if you press
it, you will get a calendar listing. Press it again to come back to the
hours themselves. You can also use the F3 key to do this.
To change which page you are viewing (Mass, Morning Prayer, etc), press F4
or click on the caption at the top right and then pick the page you want from
the list that appears.
The
calendar display lets you view and scroll through the liturgical calendar.
To view the hours for a particular day, click on the day.
To use the built-in Windows date selector to go to any given date, click on the heading that shows the name of the month. You can also press F5 to do this.
To
open the Options menu, press F2 or click on the downward-pointing triangle at
the top left of any Universalis page.
You can choose which font type and font size you want Universalis to use.
You can choose which local calendar you want Universalis to use. You can also decide whether you want the same Invitatory Psalm every day, or whether you want the psalm to change every day, going through the four permitted options, as the Universalis web site does.
This page tells you what version of the program and database you are using; it also lets you enter a registration code to unlock your trial version of Universalis and turn it into a licensed version.
This puts Universalis into a mode that is easy to use with screen readers for the blind and partially sighted. Here are instructions for using Universalis in that mode.
If you are selling or giving away your PC then you should remove the registration code even if you decide to leave the Universalis software intact – unless you are specifically intending to give away the Universalis software and no longer use it yourself.
