Universalis > Downloadable Universalis > [Download and installation for Windows Mobile / Pocket PC]
This page tells you all about installing and using the downloadable version of Universalis on Windows Mobile / Pocket PC. For general information about what the downloadable version is and what it does, please see this page.
You need a device running Windows Mobile 5 or later, or Pocket PC 3.0 or later (including Pocket PC 2002). Smartphones are not usually suitable: see the next paragraph. All handhelds manufactured after 2002 are suitable, as well as many that were manufactured before then. If you have an old computer then you can check the version of the operating system with Start > Settings > System > About.
Not all Windows Mobile devices are suitable for Universalis. In general, any device that uses a touchscreen and stylus should work, and devices (typically smartphones) that use just a keyboard will probably not work. The only way to be certain is to try downloading and installing Universalis. If a device is not suitable for Universalis, it will refuse to load or install the program.
You need 5MB of free memory on your device.
(This is the preferred method).
Download the following file to your PC: UnivPPC.exe.
Your browser may let you choose between opening the file and saving it. We usually prefer to save our downloaded files and open them separately later: if you do this, remember which folder (directory) your browser has saved the file into so that you can find it afterwards!
Once the download has completed:
UnivPPC.exe file that you downloaded (depending
on how your computer is set up, the icon may simply say "UnivPPC"
rather than "UnivPPC.exe"), and follow the instructions.UnivPPC.exe.
If you want to install Universalis on a storage card rather than in main memory, you can do this by saying "No" when ActiveSync asks you whether to install it to the default location. ActiveSync will then offer you a choice of locations including the storage card.
If you install Universalis on a storage card then it will not appear on the Today screen when you reset your device. This behaviour has been designed into Windows Mobile / Pocket PC and is outside our control. See here for a description of how to get round the problem.
(We do not officially support this method, but it has been tried on one or two mobile devices and it has worked).
Download the following file to your mobile device: univppc.cab.
Note that this is file is a lot larger than univppc.exe. It is
about 5.2MB in size.
Your device will ask you whether to save and open the file. Tell it to do so. Once the download has completed, the software will be installed automatically. Note that in this case you will not see the licence agreement. The licence agreement simply tells you that although we have tried to ensure that there are no bugs in the software, we accept no liability for the consequences of any bugs or incompatibilities that may remain.
Your program will work for at least a month without needing a registration code. Please use this time to make sure that this version of Universalis works properly and does what you want it to do. Do not buy a registration code until you are absolutely certain that the program is suitable for you.
To buy a registration code, visit this page.
Once you have bought the code:
If you are selling your device or or giving it away then you should remove the registration code even if you decide to leave the Universalis software intact – unless you are specifically intending to give away the Universalis software and no longer use it yourself.

The left and right arrows move backwards and forwards through the days. The numbered box between them indicates the current day of the month: if you tap on it, you will get a calendar listing.
To change which page you are viewing (Mass, Morning Prayer, etc), tap on the caption at the top right and then pick the page you want from the list that appears.

The calendar display lets you view and scroll through the liturgical calendar.
To view the hours for a particular day, tap on the day.
To use the built-in Pocket PC date selector to go to any given date, tap on the heading that shows the name of the month. This also gives you a quick way of going to today's date.

Universalis displays the feast or saint of the day in your Today screen and you can go to today's readings by tapping on this display.
If you don't want Universalis in your Today screen then you can turn it off using your device's standard methods for configuring the Today screen: for instance, Start > Settings > Today > Items.
If you have installed Universalis on a storage card instead of into your device's main memory (where it is normally installed), then whenever you reset your device, you will see that the Universalis entry is missing from your Today screen even if you have asked for it to be there. This is because Windows Mobile / Pocket PC builds the Today screen immediately on reset, before establishing communications with the storage card. To get the Universalis entry back, use Start > Settings > Today > Items and immediately press OK. This will make the system rebuild the Today screen, and Universalis will be part of the Today screen again.
To open the Options pages, tap on the downward-pointing triangle at the top
left of the Universalis screen:
There are three Options pages and you can move between them by tapping the appropriate tab at the bottom of the screen.
You can choose which font type and font size you want Universalis to use.
You can choose which local calendar you want Universalis to use. You can also decide whether you want the same Invitatory Psalm every day, or whether you want the psalm to change every day, going through the four permitted options, as the Universalis web site does.
This page tells you what version of the program and database you are using; it also lets you enter a registration code to unlock your trial version of Universalis and turn it into a licensed version, as described here.
