Universalis on Palm OS
The program that you install combines the Catholic Calendar with a free one-month trial of the Universalis program features.
- To get the Catholic Calendar: download and install the program from this page.
- To get a one-month free trial of the Universalis program: download and install the program from this page. At the end of the month, the program will revert to being the simple Catholic Calendar.
- To get the Universalis program permanently: download and install the program from this page. Try it out during the one-month free trial period. Once you have decided that this is definitely what you want, enter a registration code into the program.
You need a computer running Palm OS version 3.5 upwards. Most computers manufactured after early 2000 use a suitable version of Palm OS.
You need 5MB of free memory on your computer.
Universalis works with expansion memory cards (see below).
Palm Pre
The Palm Pre is not a Palm OS device and therefore won't run this download directly.
You can buy a product called MotionApps Classic, which allows you to run Palm OS programs on your Palm Pre. We haven't tested this with the Universalis Palm OS download, so we don't know if it works – but it does have a 7-day free trial period, so you should be able to try it for yourself.
Downloading
Download the following file: univpalm.zip.
Your browser may let you choose between opening the file and saving it. We usually prefer to save our downloaded files and open them separately later: if you do this, remember which folder (directory) your browser has saved the file into so that you can find it afterwards!
Installation
Windows XP and Vista
If you have Windows XP or Vista, you can install Universalis on your Palm OS computer as follows:
- Open
univpalm.zipby double-clicking on it. - A folder will open and you will see two files,
universalis.prcanduniv.pdb. - Double-click on each of these files in turn. When you double-click, the Palm Install Tool window will open, and it will show that the file has been added to the list of files that will be installed on the next HotSync operation.
- Perform a HotSync. The total size of the Universalis files is about 5MB, so the HotSync that installs Universalis will be slow. On a Palm Vx it takes more than 5 minutes; more modern Palms that use USB for synchronization will be faster.
Once the installation has been completed, you can delete univpalm.zip.
Filenames: If your copy of Windows is set up to hide filetypes
from you, univpalm.zip, universalis.prc and univ.pdb.
may appear as simply univpalm, universalis
and univ.
Access denied: If you get an "Access denied"
message when double-clicking on the files in step 3, this is because your
system is preventing you from opening .prc or .pdb
files. You may have anti-virus software that is trying to "protect"
you from what you want to do. In that case, use the method shown for "Other
operating systems":
Other operating systems (including Mac OS)
- Open the downloaded file
univpalm.zip. Recent versions of Mac OS and Windows can open Zip files directly if you double-click on them; otherwise you need to download a suitable utility. - Extract
universalis.prcanduniv.pdbfromunivpalm.zipand put them somewhere obvious, such as the desktop. Normally, the easiest way of doing this is to highlight them insideunivpalm.zip, copy them to the clipboard, go to the desktop, and paste; but simply highlighting them and dragging them to the desktop may work equally well. - Open the Palm Install Tool. In Windows, the command is usually something like Start > Palm Desktop > Install Tool.
- The Palm Install Tool has a button marked "Add". Press this
button, and in the "Open File" window that appears, navigate
to the desktop and open
universalis.prc. You should then find thatuniversalis.prchas been added to the Install Tool's list of files that are going to be installed. - Repeat the process for
univ.pdb. - Perform a HotSync.
Once the installation has been completed, you can delete univpalm.zip,
and also the copies of universalis.prc and univ.pdb
that you have put onto your desktop.
Universalis on expansion memory cards
Universalis works on expansion memory cards (SD cards, Memory Stick).
Universalis comes as two files: the program universalis.prc,
which is small, and the data file univ.pdb, which is large.
You have two choices:
- You can place both
universalis.prcanduniv.pdbon the memory card, and run Universalis from there. Your computer will copyuniversalis.prctemporarily to main memory before running it, but since this file is small it will not cause much of a delay. - For more advanced users - you can leave
universalis.prcin main memory, for speed, and moveuniv.pdbto the memory card. In this case, you must copyuniversalis.prcto a particular location: on the versions of PalmOS we have tested, the name of the directory is/Palm/Launcher. On some computers this directory will not already exist and you will have to create it.
Sometimes the Install Tool will allow you to install programs directly
on your SD card. Otherwise, there will be an application available for copying
files between main memory and the memory card. Its name varies from one
PalmOS computer to another. For example, on the Sony Clié it
is called Clié Files.
Operation
See the separate instructions.
Updating to a new version
From time to time we release new versions of the Universalis programs. You can update to the latest version free of charge simply by downloading and installing it on top of the version you already have.
To make sure that you don't miss an update, you may want to join the Universalis mailing list.
