First readingWisdom 2:23-3:9

‘In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died, but they are at peace.’

God created mankind for incorruption
and made him in the image of his own character,
but through the devil’s envy death entered the world,
and those who belong to his party experience it.
But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God,
and no torment will ever touch them.
In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died,
and their departure was thought to be an evil thing,
and their going from us to be their destruction;
but they are at peace.
For though in the sight of men they were punished,
their hope is full of immortality.
Having been disciplined a little, they will receive great good,
because God tested them and found them worthy of himself;
like gold in the furnace he tried them,
and like a sacrificial whole burnt offering he accepted them.
In the time of their visitation they will shine forth
and will run like sparks through the stubble.
They will govern nations and rule over peoples,
and the Lord will reign over them for ever.
Those who trust in him will understand truth,
and the faithful will abide with him in love,
because grace and mercy are upon his holy ones,
and he watches over his chosen.

Responsorial Psalm
Ps 34(33):2-3. 16-17. 18-19. ℟2a
I will bless the Lord at all times.
I will bless the Lord at all times,
praise of him is always in my mouth.
In the Lord my soul shall make its boast;
the humble shall hear and be glad.
I will bless the Lord at all times.
The Lord turns his eyes to the just one,
and his ears are open to their cry.
The Lord turns his face against the wicked
to cut off their remembrance from the earth.
I will bless the Lord at all times.
When the just one cries out, the Lord hears,
and rescues him in all his distress.
The Lord is close to the broken-hearted;
those whose spirit is crushed he will save.
I will bless the Lord at all times.

Gospel AcclamationJohn 14:23
Alleluia, alleluia.
If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, says the Lord,
and my Father will love him, and we will come to him.
Alleluia.

GospelLuke 17:7-10

‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.’

At that time: the Lord said, ‘Will any one of you who has a servant ploughing or keeping sheep say to him when he has come in from the field, “Come at once and recline at table”? Will he not rather say to him, “Prepare supper for me, and dress properly, and serve me while I eat and drink, and afterwards you will eat and drink”? Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded? So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, “We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.” ’

First readingIsaiah 61:1-3a

‘The Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor.’

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
because the Lord has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor;
he has sent me to bind up the broken-hearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour,
and the day of vengeance of our God;
to comfort all who mourn;
to grant to those who mourn in Sion —
to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness instead of mourning,
the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit.

Responsorial Psalm
Ps 89(88): 2-3. 4-5. 21-22. 25, 27. ℟ cf. 2a
I will sing for ever of your mercies, O Lord.
I will sing for ever of your mercies, O Lord;
through all ages my mouth will proclaim your fidelity.
I have declared your mercy is established for ever;
your fidelity stands firm as the heavens.
I will sing for ever of your mercies, O Lord.
‘With my chosen one I have made a covenant;
I have sworn to David my servant:
I will establish your descendants for ever,
and set up your throne through all ages.’
I will sing for ever of your mercies, O Lord.
‘I have found my servant David,
and with my holy oil anointed him.
My hand shall always be with him,
and my arm shall make him strong.’
I will sing for ever of your mercies, O Lord.
‘My mercy and my faithfulness shall be with him;
by my name his might shall be exalted.
He will call out to me, “You are my father,
my God, the rock of my salvation”. ’
I will sing for ever of your mercies, O Lord.

Gospel AcclamationJn13:34
Alleluia, alleluia!
I give you a new commandment:
love one another just as I have loved you,
says the Lord.
Alleluia!

Gospel
Matthew 25:31-40

‘As you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’

At that time: Jesus said to his disciples, ‘When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on his right, “Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.” Then the righteous will answer him, saying, “Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?” And the King will answer them, “Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you did it to me.” ’
