Google and Amazon would like to be the only places you get apps from: Google through Google Play and Amazon through the Amazon Appstore. But it isn't that easy. Google impose onerous requirements on device manufacturers who want to supply Google Play on their devices, and although the Amazon Appstore is available on every Kindle Fire, Amazon have decided to sell apps in only a handful of countries. Live anywhere else, and you're out of luck.
If you want the Catholic Calendar app, this page will tell you how to get it and install it.
If you want the Universalis app, get the Catholic Calendar app (instructions are on this page). Once you are absolutely sure that it works on your device and it is what you want, get a registration code (instructions are here) and enter the code into the app (instructions are here). One benefit is that once you have a registration code, you can also install Universalis onto your computer and on any other compatible devices you may have.
The Catholic Calendar app is supplied as a file called Catholic Calendar.apk. To get the file, please send us an email using the Contact Us link at the bottom of the page, and we'll email the file to you as an attachment.
How you install the app depends very much on your device. The best thing is to do a Google search for your device's name plus the word "sideload". But here are a couple of examples supplied by our users:
This story is fairly simple because the email we sent with the Catholic Calendar file was received on the Kindle Fire itself.
Catholic Calendar.apk attachment in the email we sent you, and the system will ask you if you want to install the app. Say yes.The story is more complicated this time round because the email was received on the user's computer and not on the device.
You should do this if you do not have the Google Play Store app pre-installed by the manufacturer of your device or if the app is shown (a white shopping bag) as installed, but doesn't work for some reason when a connection to the Play Store is attempted.
It is assumed that you already have a copy of 'Catholic Calendar.apk' downloaded, perhaps by email to your PC.
I used a PC USB pen drive to carry the app during the side-load. But if your PC Windows supports the MTB protocol you can connect your PC Window computer directly via a USB cable to your tablet device. Assume from now on that the apk file is on a USB pen drive.
Touch the 'Settings' icon. When the settings are displayed scroll down the left-hand column until you see 'Security'. Touch this and scroll down until you see the option 'Unknown sources' under the sub-heading 'Device Administration'.
Is there already a tick alongside 'Unknown Sources'? If so this part is done.
Otherwise touch the 'Unknown Sources' icon and OK the warning given by the system to place the tick.
Return to the device home page using the return arrow and touch the app icon 'File Browser'.
At the top lefthand corner there is a GOTO drop down menu. Choose the USB option and you will see all the contents of your pen drive including 'Catholic Calendar.apk'. Touch the this icon and you will be asked if you wish to install the app. Choose Install.
When this is completed, return to the top level and you will now see the app ready for use. Touch it and away you go.
