Universalis

Liturgia horarum

You can get free e-books containing the Liturgy of the Hours in Latin.

Each e-book contains every hour for every day, for an entire year. By the time the year ends, we will make the next year's e-book available on this page.

Do you prefer parallel Latin-English texts? The Universalis apps will give you these, but they do cost money. Follow this link for details.

The e-books

Liturgia horarum for 2014 in ePub format (20MB) – this works on all e-readers except the Amazon Kindle.

Liturgia horarum for 2014 in Kindle format (42MB) – this works on the Amazon Kindle.

In addition to physical e-readers, manufacturers often provide software applications that allow you to read e-books on mobile devices and computers. The Universalis e-books will work with these applications also.

How to get an e-book into your e-reader DEVICE

These instructions are for when you have an actual e-reader device –  Sony Reader, Nook, Kindle, and so on. For applications, see below.

Direct download

Most e-readers are able to browse the Internet if they have a wi-fi connection. If yours has this feature:

  1. Using your e-reader, visit this page. If you are obliged to type in the address of the page, universalis.com/latin.htm is sufficient.
  2. Click on, tap on, or follow the link for the format you want: ePub or Kindle.
  3. Wait for the e-book to download. This may take some time, because the e-books are large.
  4. For more information, see the instructions for your e-reader.

Download via a computer

If you can't get the e-book into your e-reader directly, download it to your computer and transfer it to your e-reader from there. It is simplest if you download to your desktop: you will be able to delete the e-book after you have transferred it to your e-reader.

Please see the instructions for your e-reader for details of how to transfer files to it from your computer. The instructions may talk about "personal files" or "personal documents". Normally, you will start by connecting the e-reader to your computer using the USB cable provided.

Email / wi-fi (for Kindle devices only)

Amazon have a Personal Documents Service, which allows our site to send an e-book directly to your Kindle device. Full instructions are here.

How to get an e-book into your e-reader APPLICATION

These instructions are for when you have a computer, phone or tablet. For e-reader devices, see above.

Mac, Windows, iOS

  1. Make sure you have a suitable reader application installed. For ePub this could be iBooks or Adobe Digital Editions. For Kindle it would be a free Kindle application from Amazon.
  2. Click or tap on the appropriate "ePub" or "Kindle" link at the top of this page.
  3. Your browser will download the file and ask if you want to open it in the appropriate application.
  4. Say yes.

Android –  ePub

  1. Make sure you have a suitable ePub reader application installed. We do not know of any. Aldiko cannot open large ePub files; ePub Reader cannot follow links; and Moon+ Reader ignores all formatting, which makes the text unusable. Please let us know if you find an ePub reader application that works.
  2. Click or tap on the appropriate "ePub" or "Kindle" link at the top of this page.
  3. Your browser will start downloading the file.
  4. Go to the Downloads application, and you will see the file there, with an icon for the application which will open it.
  5. Tap on the file.

Android – Kindle

Amazon's Kindle app on Android cannot open Kindle files.

Email / wi-fi (for Kindle applications only)

Amazon have a Personal Documents Service, which allows our site to send an e-book directly to your Kindle app. Full instructions are here.
