Downloadable Universalis (Mac)

System requirements

This page tells you all about installing and using the downloadable version of Universalis on the Apple Mac. For general information about what the downloadable version is and what it does, please see this page.

You need a computer running Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger) or 10.5 (Leopard) or later. We have not tested the software on earlier versions of Mac OS.

This is a Universal program, meaning that it will run on both Intel Macs and PowerPC Macs.

The size of the downloaded file is about 2.5MB, and the size of the program after installation is about 5MB.

Downloading

Click on this link: Universalis.dmg.

Safari - A small Downloads window will appear and the download will start automatically.

IllustrationFirefox - A window will pop up asking you if you want to save this file. Choose "Save File".

When the download has finished, you will see the file listed in the Downloads window. Click on the "Open" link next to it.

Installation

Whichever browser you used, you will now see a folder called Universalis Installation open on your desktop, with a Universalis icon inside it.

Drag the Universalis icon to wherever you want it to be. This can be your desktop, or your Applications folder.

If you put Universalis in your Applications folder then you may also like to have it visible in the Dock for easy access. Drag it from the Applications folder (not from the Universalis Installation folder) into the Dock, and you will see the other Dock items move apart to make room for it.

Tidying up

  1. Close the temporary "Universalis Installation" folder that the Universalis icon was in.
  2. Look for an icon on your desktop that is called "Universalis Installation" and has a picture of a hard disk drive. Right-click on it and select "Eject Universalis Installation" from the pop-up menu.
  3. If you can see a file called "Universalis.dmg" lying around, you can safely erase it. If you can't see it, don't worry: it only takes up 3 megabytes anyway. (Depending on your web browser, it may be in your Downloads folder or on your desktop or almost anywhere else).

Entering the registration code

Your program will work for at least a month without needing a registration code. Please use this time to make sure that this version of Universalis works properly and does what you want it to do. Do not buy a registration code until you are absolutely certain that the program is suitable for you.

To buy a registration code, visit this page.

Once you have bought the code:

  1. Start the downloaded Universalis program on your Mac.
  2. Select Universalis > Preferences from the menu. This will open the Preferences window.
  3. The Preferences window has two tabs: Calendar and Registration. Select the Registration tab.
  4. Press the button marked "Enter registration code".
  5. Enter the 9-digit registration code. You don't need to enter the hyphens. For example, if the code is 123-456-789, you can enter 123456789.
  6. Press the button marked "Done".

To remove a registration code

If you are selling or giving away your Mac then you should remove the registration code even if you decide to leave the Universalis software intact – unless you are specifically intending to give away the Universalis software along with the Mac and will no longer be using it yourself.

  1. Start Universalis. Open the Registration tab of the Preferences window, as before.
  2. Press the button marked "Remove registration code".

Using the program

The Universalis program does come with some simple help. Open the Help menu if you want to read it.

The page displayPage display

To move between the days, use the left and right arrows at the top of the window, or use the Date menu.

To view a calendar listing, click on the number between the arrows.

To change which page you are viewing (Mass, Morning Prayer, etc), click on the button at the top right, or use the Hour menu.

To make the print larger or smaller, use the View menu.

To copy the text so that you can paste it into another program, highlight it with the mouse or use Edit > Select All, then use Edit > Copy to perform the actual copy.

To make your computer speak the text out loud, use Edit > Speech > Start Speaking. If you have highlighted some text then that is what will be spoken; otherwise the whole page will be spoken.

To print the text, copy and paste it into Pages or a suitable word processor.

The calendar displayCalendar display

The calendar listing lets you view and scroll through the liturgical calendar.

To move between dates, use the scroll bar at the right-hand edge of the window. You can also use the Date menu.

To move a long way in the calendar - for instance, to another month or another year - use the Date menu or click on the heading that shows the name of the month.

To view the details for a particular day, click on that day.

The Preferences window

The command Universalis > Preferences opens the Preferences window. This has two tabs: Calendar and Registration.

The Calendar tabCalendar display

This lets you choose among the local liturgical calendars that Universalis knows about.

It also lets you decide whether you want to have the same Invitatory Psalm every day, or whether you have to have the different allowable Invitatory Psalms on different days, like the web version of Universalis.

The Registration tab

This is used to enter or remove registration codes, as described above.
