‘How the mighty have fallen in the midst of the battle!’
In those days: When David had returned from striking down the Amalekites, David remained two days in Ziklag. And on the third day, behold, a man came from Saul’s camp, with his clothes torn and dirt on his head. And when he came to David, he fell to the ground and paid homage. David said to him, ‘Where do you come from?’ And he said to him, ‘I have escaped from the camp of Israel.’ And David said to him, ‘How did it go? Tell me.’ And he answered, ‘The people fled from the battle, and also many of the people have fallen and are dead, and Saul and his son Jonathan are also dead.’
Then David took hold of his clothes and tore them, and so did all the men who were with him. And they mourned and wept and fasted until evening for Saul and for Jonathan his son and for the people of the Lord and for the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.
And David said,
‘Your glory, O Israel, is slain on your high places!
How the mighty have fallen!
‘Saul and Jonathan, beloved and lovely!
In life and in death they were not divided;
they were swifter than eagles;
they were stronger than lions.
‘You daughters of Israel, weep over Saul,
who clothed you luxuriously in scarlet,
who put ornaments of gold on your apparel.
‘How the mighty have fallen
in the midst of the battle!
‘Jonathan lies slain on your high places.
I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan;
very pleasant have you been to me;
your love to me was extraordinary,
surpassing the love of women.
‘How the mighty have fallen,
and the weapons of war perished!’
Responsorial Psalm
Ps 80(79):2-3. 5-7. ℟4b
Let your face shine forth, O Lord, and we shall be saved.
O shepherd of Israel, hear us,
you who lead Joseph like a flock:
enthroned on the cherubim, shine forth
upon Ephraim, Benjamin, Manasseh.
Rouse up your might and come to save us.
Let your face shine forth, O Lord, and we shall be saved.
How long, O Lord, God of hosts,
will you be angry at the prayer of your people?
You have fed them with tears for their bread,
an abundance of tears for their drink.
You have made us the taunt of our neighbours;
our foes mock us among themselves.
Let your face shine forth, O Lord, and we shall be saved.
Gospel Acclamation
Cf. Acts 16:14b
Alleluia, alleluia.
Open our hearts, O Lord,
that we may pay attention to the words of your Son.
Alleluia.
Gospel
Mark 3:20-21
‘They were saying of him, “He is out of his mind.” ’
At that time: Jesus went home, and the crowd gathered again, so that they could not even eat. And when his family heard it, they went out to seize him, for they were saying, ‘He is out of his mind.’
‘To preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ.’
Brothers and Sisters: To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, and to bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God, who created all things, so that through the Church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. This was according to the eternal purpose that he has realised in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through our faith in him.
Responsorial Psalm
Ps 37(36):3-4. 5-6. 30-31. ℟30a
The mouth of the upright utters wisdom.
Trust in the Lord and do good;
then you will dwell in the land and find safe pasture.
Find your delight in the Lord,
who grants your heart’s desire.
The mouth of the upright utters wisdom.
Commit your way to the Lord;
trust in him, and he will act,
and make your uprightness shine like the light,
the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.
The mouth of the upright utters wisdom.
The mouth of the upright utters wisdom,
and his tongue tells forth what is just.
The law of his God is in his heart;
his steps shall be saved from stumbling.
The mouth of the upright utters wisdom.
Gospel Acclamation
Jn13:34

Gospel
John 15:9-17
‘Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.’
At that time: Jesus said to his disciples, ‘As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.
‘This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. These things I command you, so that you will love one another.’
