Universalis e-books

Universalis gives you the pages for readings at Mass, plus all the Hours in the Liturgy of the Hours, plus an “About Today” page, and more – for every day of every year.

Apps or e-books?

Phones, tablets and computers: Don’t bother with e-books. Get a Universalis app. Whatever pages you want, and whatever dates you want, it will give them to you. An app gives you everything, and it lasts for ever. No Internet connection is needed. You can read more about apps here: Android (& Fire) · iPhone/iPad · Mac · Windows. There is no reason at all for you ever to get an e-book.

E-book readers (Kindle, Kobo, Nook etc): A Universalis e-book is just like a printed book, but electronic. Get the pages you want (for instance, Readings at Mass and Morning Prayer), for the period you want (for instance, every day in January 2025). When the period covered by an e-book is finished, you get a new e-book.

What getting an e-book involves

With printed books:

The publisher gets the book printed.
You buy it and bring it home from the bookshop.

With e-books:

The e-book has to be created.
You have to get it onto your e-book reader.

Ready-made e-books (Kindle only)

For people who want everything as simple as possible and don’t mind paying for the convenience, we make a few ready-made e-books and sell them in Amazon’s Kindle Store.

Examples are: Mass Readings for 2025; or Liturgy of the Hours from Advent 2024 to Pentecost 2025.

Creating the e-book: We do it when we send the e-book to Amazon to put in their store.

Getting it onto your reader: When you go to the Kindle Store and buy the e-book, Amazon put it onto your Kindle.

Free monthly e-books (recommended)

Creating the e-book: You go to our website and say which book you want. The website creates that e-book for you and sends it to you by email.

Getting it onto your reader: How you do this depends on your reader. For instance, Amazon have a free “Send to Kindle” service to do this wirelessly. Some other readers may need to be connected. The email we send you has links to all the instructions.

Each e-book contains the About Today page, the readings at Mass, Lauds (Morning Prayer) and Vespers (Evening Prayer) for every day in the month.
You can choose the specific calendar for your country.
These e-books cover one month. When you finish the January e-book, you click on the link to create and receive the February one – and so on through the year.

E-books for registered users

A Universalis registration code gives you unlimited access to our iPhone/iPad, Android, Mac and Windows apps as well as to e-book creation. It costs £19.99 (about $25.00 or €23.00), but you only need to buy it once. You can read about registration codes here.

Using our website

Creating the e-book: You go to our website and say which pages you want, what range of dates you want, and what local calendar you are using. The website creates an e-book for you and sends it to you by email.

Getting it onto your reader: just like for the free monthly e-books.

You can choose any combination of pages from: About Today, Readings at Mass, Office of Readings, Lauds (Morning Prayer), Terce, Sext, None, Vespers (Evening Prayer) and Compline (Night Prayer).
You can choose the specific calendar for your diocese.
You can get an e-book for a specific month, or for a full half-year (though you should note that if you are using Amazon’s “Send to Kindle” service, it may find the half-year e-books too big to handle).

Using your computer

If you have a Mac or Windows computer with the Universalis program on it, you may find this way more convenient. It doesn’t involve the Internet.

Creating the e-book: You open the Universalis program, use the command “File > Create e-book”, and follow the instructions. When the e-book has been created, you can save it onto your desktop.

Getting it onto your reader: just like for the free monthly e-books.
