Universalis instructions
Everything on this page refers both to the iPhone and the iPod Touch. There is no difference between the two devices as far as this program is concerned.
Views
The calendar view shows you an extract from the liturgical calendar:

The page view shows you one particular page for your chosen day:

The calendar view
This lets you view and scroll through the liturgical calendar.
To go to the page view for a particular date, tap on that date.
Going to a different year
If you scroll to the top of the calendar, you will see a line saying "Previous year". Tap on this to go one year back. At the bottom of the calendar you will find a line saying "Next year". Tap on this to go one year forward.
Going to a specific date
Tap the Pick button to bring up the standard iPhone date picker.
Coming back to today
If you have been exploring the calendar and want to get back to today quickly and easily, tap the Pick button, and underneath the iPhone date picker you will see a button marked Today.
Using a different local calendar
Different parts of the world have their own local calendars, with variations from the basic General Calendar. To change calendars, tap the "i" symbol at the bottom left of the screen and select "Local Calendars" from the menu that appears.
The page view
Scrolling
You can scroll the text by dragging it, just as with any other iPhone program.
Zooming
You can zoom in and out using the same pinch-zoom technique that works in Safari and other iPhone programs.
You can also double-tap on the text display to enlarge the text. After enough double-taps, the text goes back from large to small.
A quick shortcut back to the standard text size is to triple-tap on the text display.
Viewing different dates
Tap the Dates button to go to the calendar view.
Viewing different pages
Tap the Hours button on the top right to switch between About Today, Mass readings, the Invitatory Psalm, Morning Prayer, the three daytime hours (mid-morning, midday, and afternoon), Evening Prayer, Night Prayer, and the Office of Readings.
Settings
To open the Settings screen, tap the "i" symbol at the bottom left of the calendar screen and select "Settings" from the menu that appears.
You can decide whether you want the same Invitatory Psalm every day, or whether you want the psalm to change every day, going through the four permitted options, as the Universalis web site does.
For the Liturgy of the Hours, you can choose whether to use the Grail translation of the psalms or the translation that is used on the Universalis web site. (The scripture readings for the Liturgy of the Hours are always in the Jerusalem Bible version).
For the readings at Mass, you can choose whether to use the Jerusalem Bible and the Grail psalms (which are used in the UK and many other parts of the world) or the New American Bible scripture readings and psalms. The New American Bible option is only available if you select one of the United States liturgical calendars.
Copying to the pasteboard
You can copy text from Universalis and paste it into other programs.
To copy a single psalm or reading: hold your finger on it for a second or so. A blue rectangle will appear round the chosen item, and a menu will appear. Choose "Copy".
To copy a whole Hour: do the same, but choose "Select All" instead of Copy. Then do it again, this time with "Copy".
