Catholic Calendar instructions
Everything on this page refers both to the iPhone and the iPod Touch. There is no difference between the two devices as far as this program is concerned.
If you are blind or partially sighted, Apple's VoiceOver screen reader may be of help to you. See Universalis with VoiceOver. If you can read the screen, but would still like to hear it read to you sometimes, see VoiceOver for Sighted People.
The calendar view
This lets you view and scroll through the liturgical calendar.

To go to the page view for a particular date, tap on that date.
Going to a different year
If you scroll to the top of the calendar, you will see a line saying "Previous year". Tap on this to go one year back. At the bottom of the calendar you will find a line saying "Next year". Tap on this to go one year forward.
Going to a specific date
Tto bring up the standard iPhone date picker, tap the Pick button at the top right.
Coming back to today
If you have been exploring the calendar and want to get back to today quickly and easily, tap the Pick button at the top right. Underneath the standard iPhone date picker you will see a button marked Today.
Using a different local calendar
Different parts of the world have their own local calendars, with variations
from the basic General Calendar. To change calendars, tap on the
symbol at the bottom left of the screen. Select "Local Calendars"
from the menu that appears.
The page view
The page view shows you one particular page for your chosen day.

Viewing different dates
To go to the calendar view, tap the Dates button at the top left.
Viewing different pages
You can view the About Today page for any day.
For today, yesterday, and tomorrow only, you can view a preview of the other Universalis pages: Mass readings, the Invitatory Psalm, Morning Prayer, the three daytime hours (mid-morning, midday, and afternoon), Evening Prayer, Night Prayer, and the Office of Readings. To do this, tap the Hours button on the top right, and pick your chosen page from the menu that appears.
- To view the preview pages, you must be connected to the Internet.
- You can only see the preview pages for yesterday, today and tomorrow.
- For the Liturgy of the Hours, you can only see the "Universalis" translation of the Psalms, not the Grail version.
- For the readings at Mass, you can see the Jerusalem Bible translation but not the NAB version. Moreover, you cannot see the Responsorial Psalm at all. These restrictions are imposed by the copyright owners.
- If you find these limitations inconvenient, buy the Universalis application, which is unrestricted and never requires an Internet connection.
Scrolling
You can scroll the text by dragging it, just as with any other iPhone program.
Zooming
You can zoom in and out using the same pinch-zoom technique that works in Safari and other iPhone programs.
You can also double-tap on the text display to enlarge the text. After enough double-taps, the text goes back from large to small.
A quick shortcut back to the standard text size is to triple-tap on the text display.
Copying to the pasteboard
You can copy text from Universalis and paste it into other programs.
To copy a single psalm or reading: hold your finger on it for a second or so. A blue rectangle will appear round the chosen item, and a menu will appear. Choose "Copy".
To copy a whole Hour: do the same, but choose "Select All" instead of Copy. Then do it again, this time with "Copy".
Bible versions
The scripture readings in the preview pages all use the Jerusalem Bible translation. If you buy the Universalis application, you will also have the option of the New American Bible translation for the readings at Mass.
