The duties of the pastors and the faithful

Now I have something to tell your elders: I am an elder myself, and a witness to the sufferings of Christ, and with you I have a share in the glory that is to be revealed. Be the shepherds of the flock of God that is entrusted to you: watch over it, not simply as a duty but gladly, because God wants it; not for sordid money, but because you are eager to do it. Never be a dictator over any group that is put in your charge, but be an example that the whole flock can follow. When the chief shepherd appears, you will be given the crown of unfading glory.
  To the rest of you I say: do what the elders tell you, and all wrap yourselves in humility to be servants of each other, because God refuses the proud and will always favour the humble. Bow down, then, before the power of God now, and he will raise you up on the appointed day; unload all your worries on to him, since he is looking after you. Be calm but vigilant, because your enemy the devil is prowling round like a roaring lion, looking for someone to eat. Stand up to him, strong in faith and in the knowledge that your brothers all over the world are suffering the same things. You will have to suffer only for a little while: the God of all grace who called you to eternal glory in Christ will see that all is well again: he will confirm, strengthen and support you. His power lasts for ever and ever. Amen.

From the Decree on the Priestly Ministry and Life of the Second Vatican Council

Priests are called to perfection

Priests by the sacrament of Order take on the likeness of Christ, the Priest, and become ministers of the Head, assisting the Order of bishops in building up and caring for the Body of Christ which is his Church. Already in baptism priests, like all the faithful, were consecrated to God. Despite human frailty they were given the sign and gift of so great a calling and of the grace to make possible the perfection which they can and must seek. ‘Be ye therefore perfect’ our Lord said ‘as your heavenly Father is perfect.’
  Priests, however, have a special obligation to acquire perfection because they were consecrated afresh to God when they were ordained. They have been fashioned as living instruments of Christ the Eternal Priest to continue on earth the wonderful work of salvation whereby the whole human race was made whole by his divine power.
  Each priest is enriched with a particular grace because in his own way he assumes the person of Christ himself. This enables him to serve his own flock and the whole People of God. He is thus made more capable of aspiring to the perfection of him whose place he takes. The weakness of his human nature is relieved by the holiness of him who for us was made the High Priest ‘holy, guiltless, undefiled, not reckoned among sinners’.
  Christ, whom the Father sanctified, consecrated and sent out into the world, ‘gave himself for us to redeem us from all iniquity and to purify for himself a people of his own zealous for good deeds’. Thus through his passion he entered into his glory. Similarly priests, consecrated by the anointing of the Holy Spirit and sent out by Christ, must practise mortification and give themselves entirely to the service of mankind. In this way, enriched by holiness in Christ, they can achieve perfect manhood.
  So in the exercise of their ministry of the Spirit and of justice they are strengthened in their spiritual lives if only they are submissive to the promptings of the Spirit of Christ which leads them and gives them life. Both by their sacred actions day by day and by the entire ministry which they share with their bishop and brother priests, they are brought forward on the path to perfection.
  A priest’s personal holiness helps to make his own ministry more fruitful. Although unworthiness in the priest is no obstacle to the flow of saving grace, it is nevertheless God’s way to work wonders of grace only through those who are more docile and sensitive to the inspiration and guidance of the Holy Spirit. These are the priests who through their union with Christ and their holiness of life are able to say with the Apostle: ‘I live, yet not I live, but Christ lives in me.’
