Compline (Night Prayer)

INTRODUCTION
Deus, in adiutórium meum inténde.
  Dómine, ad adiuvándum me festína.
Glória Patri et Fílio*
  et Spirítui Sancto.
Sicut erat in princípio et nunc et semper*
  et in sǽcula sæculórum.
Amen. Allelúia.
INTRODUCTION
O God, come to our aid.
O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son
  and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
  world without end.
Amen. Alleluia.

Examination of Conscience
This is an excellent moment for an examination of conscience. In a communal celebration of Compline, one of the penitential acts given in the Missal may be recited.
Confíteor Deo omnipoténti
et vobis, fratres,
quia peccávi nimis
cogitatióne, verbo,
ópere et omissióne:
mea culpa,
mea culpa,
mea máxima culpa.
Ideo precor beátam Maríam semper Vírginem,
omnes Angelos et Sanctos,
et vos, fratres,
oráre pro me ad Dóminum Deum nostrum.
Misereátur nostri omnípotens Deus
et, dimissís peccátis nostris,
perdúcat nos ad vitam ætérnam.
Amen.
I confess to almighty God
and to you, my brothers and sisters,
that I have greatly sinned,
in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,
through my fault,
through my fault,
through my most grievous fault;
therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin,
all the Angels and Saints,
and you, my brothers and sisters,
to pray for me to the Lord our God.
May almighty God have mercy on us,
forgive us our sins,
and bring us to everlasting life.
Amen.

Hymnus
Iesu, redémptor sæculi,
Verbum Patris altíssimi,
lux lucis invisíbilis,
custos tuórum pérvigil:
Tu fabricátor ómnium
discrétor atque témporum,
fessa labóre córpora
noctis quiéte récrea.
Qui frangis ima tártara,
tu nos ab hoste líbera,
ne váleat sedúcere
tuo redémptos sánguine,
Ut, dum graváti córpore
brevi manémus témpore,
sic caro nostra dórmiat
ut mens sopórem nésciat.
Iesu, tibi sit glória,
qui morte victa prænites,
cum Patre et almo Spíritu,
in sempitérna sæcula.
Amen.
Hymn
Jesu, the world’s redeeming Lord,
The Father’s co-eternal Word,
Of light invisible true Light,
Thine Israel’s Keeper day and night.
Our great Creator and our Guide,
Who times and seasons dost divide,
Refresh at night with quiet rest,
Our limbs by daily toil oppressed.
We pray thee, while we dwell below,
Preserve us from our ghostly foe;
Nor let his wiles victorious be
O’er them that are redeemed by thee.
That while in this frail house of clay
A little longer here we stay,
Our flesh in thee may sweetly sleep,
Our souls with thee their vigils keep.
All praise be thine, O risen Lord,
From death to endless life restored;
All praise to God the Father be,
And Holy Ghost eternally.

Ps 142:1-11
In angustiis oratio

Non iustificatur homo ex operibus legis nisi per fidem Iesu Christi” (Gal 2, 16).

Allelúia, allelúia, allelúia.
1Dómine, exáudi oratiónem meam,†
áuribus pércipe obsecratiónem meam in veritáte tua;*
  exáudi me in tua iustítia.
2Et non intres in iudícium cum servo tuo,*
quia non iustificábitur in conspéctu tuo omnis vivens.
3Quia persecútus est inimícus ánimam meam,†
  contrívit in terra vitam meam,*
collocávit me in obscúris sicut mórtuos a sǽculo.
4Et anxiátus est in me spíritus meus,*
in médio mei obríguit cor meum.
5Memor fui diérum antiquórum,†
meditátus sum in ómnibus opéribus tuis,*
  in factis mánuum tuárum recogitábam.
6Expándi manus meas ad te,*
ánima mea sicut terra sine aqua tibi.
7Velóciter exáudi me, Dómine;*
  defécit spíritus meus.
Non abscóndas fáciem tuam a me,*
ne símilis fiam descendéntibus in lacum.
8Audítam fac mihi mane misericórdiam tuam,*
  quia in te sperávi.
Notam fac mihi viam, in qua ámbulem,*
quia ad te levávi ánimam meam.
9Eripe me de inimícis meis,*
  Dómine, ad te confúgi.
10Doce me fácere voluntátem tuam,*
  quia Deus meus es tu.
Spíritus tuus bonus dedúcet me in terram rectam;*
11propter nomen tuum, Dómine, vivificábis me.
In iustítia tua*
  edúces de tribulatióne ánimam meam.
Glória Patri et Fílio*
  et Spirítui Sancto.
Sicut erat in princípio et nunc et semper*
  et in sǽcula sæculórum.
Amen.
Allelúia, allelúia, allelúia.

Psalm 142 (143)
A prayer in time of trouble

Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.
Lord, listen to my prayer:
  in your faithfulness turn your ear to my pleading;
  in your justice, hear me.
Do not judge your servant:
nothing that lives can justify itself before you.
The enemy has hounded my spirit,
he has crushed my life to the ground,
he has shut me in darkness, like the dead of long ago.
So my spirit trembles within me,
  my heart turns to stone.
I remind myself of the days of old,
I reflect on all your works,
I meditate once more on the work of your hands.
I stretch out my arms to you,
I stretch out my soul, like a land without water.
Come quickly and hear me, O Lord,
  for my spirit is weakening.
Do not hide your face from me,
do not let me be like the dead,
who go down to the underworld.
Show me your mercy at daybreak,
because of my trust in you.
Tell me the way I should follow,
for I lift up my soul towards you.
Rescue me from my enemies:
Lord, I flee to you for refuge.
Teach me to do your will,
  for you are my God.
Your good spirit will lead me to the land of justice;
for your name’s sake, Lord, you will give me life.
In your righteousness you will lead my soul
  away from all tribulation.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son
  and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
  world without end.
Amen.
Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

Lectio brevis1 Petr 5:8-9

Scripture Reading1 Peter 5:8-9 ©
Be calm but vigilant, because your enemy the devil is prowling round like a roaring lion, looking for someone to eat. Stand up to him, strong in faith.

CanticleNunc Dimittis
Save us, Lord, while we are awake; protect us while we sleep; that we may keep watch with Christ and rest with him in peace. Alleluia.
Now, Master, you let your servant go in peace.
  You have fulfilled your promise.
My own eyes have seen your salvation,
which you have prepared in the sight of all peoples.
A light to bring the Gentiles from darkness;
the glory of your people Israel.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son
  and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
  world without end.
Amen.
Save us, Lord, while we are awake; protect us while we sleep; that we may keep watch with Christ and rest with him in peace. Alleluia.

  Amen.
Let us pray.
In your mercy, Lord,
dispel the darkness of this night.
Let your household so sleep in peace
that at the dawn of a new day
they may, with joy, waken in your name.
Through Christ our Lord,
Amen.

Noctem quiétam et finem perféctum concédat nobis Dóminus omnípotens.
  Amen.
The Lord grant us a quiet night and a perfect end.
  Amen.
