Universalis

Liturgia horarum

You can get free e-books containing the Liturgy of the Hours in Latin. The e-books include not just the General Calendar but all calendars known to Universalis.

Each e-book contains every Hour for every day. Because this makes the e-books large, we divide each year into two halves.

Installation instructions for e-reader DEVICES

Direct download on your e-reader

Most e-readers are able to browse the Internet if they have a wi-fi connection. If yours has this feature:

  1. Using your e-reader, visit this page. If you are obliged to type in the address of the page, universalis.com/latin.htm is sufficient. (Most models of the Amazon Kindle hide their web browser behind a menu command labelled “Experimental”).
  2. Click on, tap on, or follow the link for the format you want: ePub for e-book readers in general or Kindle (.mobi) for the Amazon Kindle.
  3. Wait for the e-book to download. This may take some time, because the e-books are large.
  4. For more information, see the instructions for your e-reader.

Download via a computer

If you can't get the e-book into your e-reader directly, you can download it to your computer first and then transfer it to your e-reader.

  1. At the top of this page, click on the link for the format you want: ePub for e-book readers in general or Kindle (.mobi) for the Amazon Kindle. It is simplest if you download to your desktop, because then you will know where to find it.
  2. Next, you need to transfer the downloaded file to your e-reader. Please see the instructions which come with your e-reader for details of how to transfer files to it from your computer. In most cases, you will start by connecting the e-reader to your computer using the USB cable provided.
  3. Once you have transferred the downloaded file, you can delete it from your computer’s desktop.

Amazon Kindle

With the Amazon Kindle, you have a choice

Direct download: see the “Direct download on your e-reader” section, above. You will need the Kindle (.mobi) format.

Download via computer and cable: see the “Download via a computer” section, above. You will need the Kindle (.mobi) format.

Wireless installation

First, download the ePub format onto your computer: not the Kindle format.

Now you have a choice.

Use Amazon’s “Send to Kindle”: You can read all about this here. You can either use Amazon’s website directly or install a “Send to Kindle” program on your computer.

A little while after you have sent the e-book, Amazon will install it wirelessly on your Kindle.

Email to your Kindle: Your Kindle has its own email address, which ends in @kindle.com. Take your downloaded file and email it to that address. Before you do this for the first time, you need to find out what your Kindle’s email address is, and also tell Amazon’s Personal Documents service to accept emails from you. This page has full details.
