Readings at Mass

Liturgical Colour: White. Year: C(I).

First reading
1 Kings 8:22-23, 27-30

‘You have said, “My name shall be there”, that you may listen to the plea of your people Israel.’

In those days: Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord in the presence of all the assembly of Israel and spread out his hands towards heaven, and said, ‘O Lord, God of Israel, there is no God like you, in heaven above or on earth beneath, keeping covenant and showing steadfast love to your servants who walk before you with all their heart.
  ‘But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain you; how much less this house that I have built! Yet have regard to the prayer of your servant and to his plea, O Lord my God, listening to the cry and to the prayer that your servant prays before you this day, that your eyes may be open night and day towards this house, the place of which you have said, “My name shall be there”, that you may listen to the prayer that your servant offers towards this place. And listen to the plea of your servant and of your people Israel, when they pray towards this place. And listen in heaven your dwelling place, and when you hear, forgive.’

Responsorial Psalm
1 Ch 29:10. 11a-c. 11d-12a. 12b-d. ℟13b
We praise your splendid name, O Lord.
Blessed are you, O Lord,
God of Israel, our father,
from eternity unto eternity.
We praise your splendid name, O Lord.
Yours, O Lord, is greatness and power,
splendour, victory and majesty;
for all is yours in heaven and on earth.
We praise your splendid name, O Lord.
Yours, O Lord, is the kingdom,
you are exalted as head over all.
Riches and honour are from you.
We praise your splendid name, O Lord.
You have dominion over all.
In your hand is power and might;
your hand gives greatness and strength to all.
We praise your splendid name, O Lord.

Gospel Acclamation
2 Chronicles 7:16
I have chosen and consecrated this house, says the Lord,
that my name may be there for ever.

Gospel
Matthew 16:13-19

‘You are Peter, and I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven.’

At that time: When Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say that the Son of Man is?’ And they said, ‘Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Simon Peter replied, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’ And Jesus answered him, ‘Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.’
