INTRODUCTION
O God, come to our aid.
  O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son
  and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
  is now, and ever shall be,
  world without end.
Amen.

Hymnus
Iam, Christe, sol iustítiæ,
mentis dehíscant ténebræ,
virtútum ut lux rédeat,
terris diem cum réparas.
Dans tempus acceptábile
et pǽnitens cor tríbue,
convértat ut benígnitas
quos longa suffert píetas;
Quiddámque pæniténtiæ
da ferre, quo fit démptio,
maióre tuo múnere,
culpárum quamvis grándium.
Dies venit, dies tua,
per quam reflórent ómnia;
lætémur in hac ut tuæ
per hanc redúcti grátiæ.
Te rerum univérsitas,
clemens, adóret, Trínitas,
et nos novi per véniam
novum canámus cánticum. Amen.
Hymn
Lord, who throughout these forty days
For us didst fast and pray,
Teach us with thee to mourn our sins,
And close by thee to stay.
As thou with Satan didst contend,
And didst the victory win,
O give us strength in thee to fight,
In thee to conquer sin.
As thirst and hunger thou didst bear,
So teach us, gracious Lord,
To die to self, and daily live
By thy most holy word.
And through these days of penitence,
And through thy Passiontide,
Yea, evermore, in life and death,
Jesus, with us abide.

Ps 50:3-21
Miserere mei, Deus

Renovari spiritu mentis vestræ et induere novum hominem” (Eph 4, 23-24).

Acceptábis sacrifícium iustítiæ super altáre tuum, Dómine.
3Miserére mei, Deus,*
  secúndum misericórdiam tuam;
et secúndum multitúdinem miseratiónum tuárum*
  dele iniquitátem meam.
4Amplius lava me ab iniquitáte mea*
  et a peccáto meo munda me.
5Quóniam iniquitátem meam ego cognósco,*
  et peccátum meum contra me est semper.
6Tibi, tibi soli peccávi*
  et malum coram te feci,
ut iustus inveniáris in senténtia tua*
  et æquus in iudício tuo.
7Ecce enim in iniquitáte generátus sum,*
  et in peccáto concépit me mater mea.
8Ecce enim veritátem in corde dilexísti*
  et in occúlto sapiéntiam manifestásti mihi.
9Aspérges me hyssópo, et mundábor;*
  lavábis me, et super nivem dealbábor.
10Audíre me fácies gáudium et lætítiam,*
  et exsultábunt ossa, quæ contrivísti.
11Avérte fáciem tuam a peccátis meis*
  et omnes iniquitátes meas dele.
12Cor mundum crea in me, Deus,*
  et spíritum firmum ínnova in viscéribus meis.
13Ne proícias me a fácie tua*
  et spíritum sanctum tuum ne áuferas a me.
14Redde mihi lætítiam salutáris tui*
  et spíritu promptíssimo confírma me.
15Docébo iníquos vias tuas,*
  et ímpii ad te converténtur.
16Líbera me de sanguínibus, Deus, Deus salútis meæ,*
  et exsultábit lingua mea iustítiam tuam.
17Dómine, lábia mea apéries,*
  et os meum annuntiábit laudem tuam.
18Non enim sacrifício delectáris,*
  holocáustum, si ófferam, non placébit.
19Sacrifícium Deo spíritus contribulátus,*
  cor contrítum et humiliátum, Deus, non despícies.
20Benígne fac, Dómine, in bona voluntáte tua Sion,*
  ut ædificéntur muri Ierúsalem.
21Tunc acceptábis sacrifícium iustítiæ, oblatiónes et holocáusta;*
  tunc impónent super altáre tuum vítulos.
Glória Patri et Fílio*
  et Spirítui Sancto.
Sicut erat in princípio et nunc et semper*
  et in sǽcula sæculórum.
Amen.
Acceptábis sacrifícium iustítiæ super altáre tuum, Dómine.

Psalm 50 (51)
God, have mercy on me

Lord, you will be pleased with lawful sacrifice offered on your altar.
Take pity on me, Lord, in your mercy;
  in your abundance of mercy wipe out my guilt.
Wash me ever more from my guilt
  and cleanse me from my sin.
For I know how guilty I am:
  my sin is always before me.
Against you, you alone have I sinned,
  and I have done evil in your sight.
Know this, so that you may give just sentence
  and an unbiased judgement.
See, I was conceived in guilt,
  in sin my mother conceived me;
but you love truth in the heart,
  and deep within me you have shown me your wisdom.
You will sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be made clean;
  you will wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
You will make me hear the sound of joy and gladness;
  the bones you have crushed will rejoice.
Turn your face away from my sins
  and wipe out all my transgressions;
create a pure heart in me, God,
  put a steadfast spirit into me.
Do not send me away from your presence,
  or withdraw your holy spirit from me;
give me again the joy of your salvation,
  and be ready to strengthen me with your spirit.
I will teach the unjust your ways,
  and the impious will return to you.
Free me from the guilt of bloodshed, God, God my saviour,
  and my voice will glory in your justice.
Open my lips, Lord,
  and my mouth will proclaim your praise;
for you do not delight in sacrifices:
  if I offered you a burnt offering, it would not please you.
The true sacrifice is a broken spirit:
  a contrite and humble heart, O God, you will not refuse.
Be pleased, Lord, to look kindly on Zion,
  so that the walls of Jerusalem can be rebuilt,
Then indeed you will accept the proper sacrifices, gifts and burnt offerings;
  then indeed will bullocks be laid upon your altar.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son
  and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
  is now, and ever shall be,
  world without end.
Amen.
Lord, you will be pleased with lawful sacrifice offered on your altar.

CanticumIs 45:15-25

Omnes gentes convertantur ad Dominum

In nomine Iesu omne genu flectatur” (Phil 2, 10).

In Dómino iustificábitur et laudábitur omne semen Israel.
15Vere tu es Deus abscónditus,*
  Deus Israel salvátor.
16Confúsi sunt et erubuérunt omnes,*
  simul abiérunt in confusiónem fabricatóres idolórum.
  qui formávit terram et fecit eam, ipse fundávit eam;
non ut vácua esset, creávit eam,†
  ut habitarétur, formávit eam:*
  «Ego Dóminus, et non est álius.
19Non in abscóndito locútus sum,*
  in loco terræ tenebróso;
non dixi sémini Iacob: “Frustra quǽrite me”.*
  verbum, quod non revertétur;
quia mihi curvábitur omne genu,*
  et iurábit omnis lingua».
«24Tantum in Dómino» dicent*
  «sunt iustítiæ et robur!».
Ad eum vénient et confundéntur†
  omnes, qui repúgnant ei:*
  25in Dómino iustificábitur et laudábitur omne semen Israel.
Glória Patri et Fílio*
  et Spirítui Sancto.
Sicut erat in princípio et nunc et semper*

Amen.
In Dómino iustificábitur et laudábitur omne semen Israel.
CanticleIsaiah 45

All peoples, turn to the Lord

All the descendants of Israel shall glory in victory through the Lord.
In truth you are a hidden God,
  the God and Saviour of Israel.
They were dismayed and ashamed, all the makers of idols,
  all of them fled in dismay.
Israel has been saved by the Lord, saved for ever;
  you will not be dismayed or ashamed,
  to the end of time.
For thus says the Lord, the God
  who made the heavens,
  who made the earth, shaped it, set it firm –
he did not make it to be empty,
  but to be full of life –
“I am the Lord, there is no other.
  I have not spoken secretly,
  in some dark corner of the earth.
I have not said to the children of Jacob, ‘seek me in vain.’
  I am the Lord who speaks justice, who proclaims uprightness.
“Gather together, come, approach me
  all you who have been rescued from the Gentiles.
They were ignorant, who raised up wooden idols
  and begged favours of a god without power.
Announce it – come, ponder it together –
  who was saying this from the beginning, who foretold this from the start?
Am I not the Lord?
  Is there any other God but me?
  Do you seek a just God who will save you? There is no other.
“Turn to me and you will be saved, all you ends of the earth;
  for I am God, there is no other.
“I have sworn by my own being,
  I have decreed a judgement that will not be revoked;
for every knee will bend to me,
  every tongue swear by my name.”
“Only in the Lord,” they will say,
  “are there justice and strength!”
All who resisted him will come to him, and be dismayed;
  but in the Lord all descendants of Israel
  will receive justice and glory.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son
  and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
  is now, and ever shall be,
  world without end.
Amen.
All the descendants of Israel shall glory in victory through the Lord.

4Introíte portas eius in confessióne,†
  átria eius in hymnis,*
  confitémini illi, benedícite nómini eius.

Psalm 99 (100)
Enter the Temple with joy

Come before the Lord, singing for joy.
Rejoice in the Lord, all the earth,
  and serve him with joy.
Exult as you enter his presence.
Know that the Lord is God.
He made us and we are his
  – his people, the sheep of his flock.
Cry out his praises as you enter his gates,
  fill his courtyards with songs.
Proclaim him and bless his name;
  for the Lord is our delight.
His mercy lasts for ever,
  his faithfulness through all the ages.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son
  and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
  is now, and ever shall be,
  world without end.
Amen.
Come before the Lord, singing for joy.

Lectio brevisIs 52:13-15
Scripture ReadingIsaiah 52:13-15 ©
See, my servant will prosper, he shall be lifted up, exalted, rise to great heights. As the crowds were appalled on seeing him – so disfigured did he look that he seemed no longer human – so will the crowds be astonished at him, and kings stand speechless before him; for they shall see something never told and witness something never heard before.

Responsorium breve
℣. Ipse liberábit me* De láqueo venántium. Ipse.
℟. Et a verbo malígno.* De láqueo venántium. Glória Patri. Ipse.
Short Responsory
It is he who will free me from the snare of the hunters.
It is he who will free me from the snare of the hunters.
And from the evil word.
It is he who will free me from the snare of the hunters.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
It is he who will free me from the snare of the hunters.

Canticum

De Messia eiusque præcursore

Multa bona ópera operátus sum vobis, dicit Dóminus; propter quod opus vultis me occídere?
Benedíctus Dóminus Deus Israel,*
  quia visitávit et fecit redemptiónem plebi suæ
et eréxit cornu salútis nobis*
  in domo David púeri sui,
sicut locútus est per os sanctórum,*
  qui a sæculo sunt, prophetárum eius,
salútem ex inimícis nostris*
  et de manu ómnium, qui odérunt nos;
  in remissiónem peccatórum eórum,
per víscera misericórdiæ Dei nostri,*
  in quibus visitábit nos óriens ex alto,
illumináre his, qui in ténebris et in umbra mortis sedent*
  ad dirigéndos pedes nostros in viam pacis.
Glória Patri et Fílio*
  et Spirítui Sancto.
Sicut erat in princípio et nunc et semper*
  et in sǽcula sæculórum.
Amen.
Multa bona ópera operátus sum vobis, dicit Dóminus; propter quod opus vultis me occídere?
CanticleBenedictus

The Messiah and his forerunner

I have done many good works for you to see, said the Lord. For which of these works do you wish to kill me?
Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
  for he has come to his people and brought about their redemption.
He has raised up the sign of salvation
  in the house of his servant David,
as he promised through the mouth of the holy ones,
  his prophets through the ages:
to rescue us from our enemies
  and all who hate us,
to take pity on our fathers,
  to remember his holy covenant
and the oath he swore to Abraham our father,
  that he would give himself to us,
that we could serve him without fear
  – freed from the hands of our enemies –
in uprightness and holiness before him,
  for all of our days.
And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High:
  for you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare his path,
to let his people know their salvation,
  so that their sins may be forgiven.
Through the bottomless mercy of our God,
  one born on high will visit us
to give light to those who walk in darkness,
  who live in the shadow of death;
  to lead our feet in the path of peace.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son
  and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
  is now, and ever shall be,
  world without end.
Amen.
I have done many good works for you to see, said the Lord. For which of these works do you wish to kill me?

Preces
Grátias agámus Christo Dómino, qui in cruce móriens nobis vitam cóntulit, eúmque ex corde deprecémur:
Per mortem tuam vivífica nos.
Magíster et Salvátor noster, qui fídei tuæ documénta nobis contulísti, nosque innovásti glória passiónis,
  fac ne veterascámus in áctibus pravitátis.
Prayers and intercessions
We give thanks to Christ the Lord, who died on the cross that we might live. Let us pray to him with all our heart.
Lord Jesus, may your death bring us to life.
Master and Saviour, you have taught us by your life and renewed us by your passion;
  do not allow us to grow used to sin.
Lord Jesus, may your death bring us to life.
You call on us to feed the hungry;
  let us deny ourselves some food this day to help our brothers in their need.
Lord Jesus, may your death bring us to life.
May we accept from your hands this day of Lent;
  may we make it yours by deeds of love.
Lord Jesus, may your death bring us to life.
End the rebellion within our hearts;
  make us generous and willing to share.
Lord Jesus, may your death bring us to life.

Pater noster, qui es in cælis:
sanctificétur nomen tuum;
advéniat regnum tuum;
fiat volúntas tua, sicut in cælo et in terra.
Panem nostrum cotidiánum da nobis hódie;
et dimítte nobis débita nostra,
sicut et nos dimíttimus debitóribus nostris;
et ne nos indúcas in tentatiónem;
sed líbera nos a malo.
Our Father, who art in heaven,
  hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
  Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
  and forgive us our trespasses,
  as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
  but deliver us from evil.

Absólve, quǽsumus, Dómine, tuórum delícta populórum, ut a peccatórum néxibus, quæ pro nostra fragilitáte contráximus, tua benignitáte liberémur.
Per Dóminum nostrum Iesum Christum, Fílium tuum,
qui tecum vivit et regnat in unitáte Spíritus Sancti, Deus,
per ómnia sǽcula sæculórum.
Amen.
Lord, break the bonds of sin
  which our weaknesses have forged to enchain us,
and in your loving mercy
  forgive your people’s guilt.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

  Amen.
The Lord bless us, and keep us from all evil, and bring us to everlasting life.
  Amen.
